We are one of New England's premier independent bookstores, family-owned and locally run since 1961. We have been playing a vital role in shaping the world of independent bookselling and nurturing connection with our community’s curious minds through books and social discourse.

Our welcoming and knowledgeable booksellers thoughtfully curate wonderful in store and online collections, from bestsellers to eclectic titles. The Used Book Cellar, renowned remainder selection, extensive children’s, and cookware sections—together with the aroma of new books, twinkle of fairy lights, and legendary creaky floors—bring warmth and energy to our community in the heart of Brookline. We complement books with our unique, beautiful gifts; award-winning events series, including the celebrated Transnational Literature Series; and specialty foods and beverages in our kitchen-focused retail area.

Our mission is to foster community through the written word, represent a diverse range of voices and histories, and inspire conversations that enrich our lives.

Brookline Booksmith is open for in-person, by phone, and online shopping. We keep things clean, safe, and current on COVID guidelines. Also, enjoy free curbside pickup, located at the window by the main entrance to our store.

Find us in person at 279 Harvard Street in Brookline, open every day, by phone at 617-566-6660, online at on Instagram and Facebook @brooklinebooksmith, and Twitter @booksmithtweets.
