“Kantika,” which means “song” in the old language of Ladino (Judeo-Spanish), is a musical project that contains hypnotizing melodies, captivating soundscapes, and powerful lyrics. The project is lead by singer and songwriter Tutti Druyan, and it features drummer-producer Shaqed Druyan, and saxophonist-composer Edmar Colón. This soon-to-be-released album brings together traditional Sephardic songs with newly composed music and lyrics in English, creating a seamless blend between the two languages to complement one another both in the music and in the text.

This unique project conjures a powerful bond between the old and the new. By abstracting aesthetics from different musical genres and putting this dying language in the forefront, Kantika promises to be an exciting connection between music and the hope of the preservation of language.

Join Tutti, Shaqed, and Edmar, at the community engagement event of Kantika on Wednesday, March 29th at 7:00 PM at Brookline Booksmith, and be the first to hear some of the recorded work, see the album artwork, hear some live music, and much more.

Kantika is made possible by generous grants from Live Arts Boston and the Combined Jewish Philanthropies Arts and Culture Community Impact Grant Fund.
