Mother in the Dark

When Anna receives a shattering call about her mother that threatens to blow up her own precariously constructed life in New York, she is forced to confront her volatile family history. MOTHER IN THE DARK deftly alternates between Anna’s childhood in Boston and her twenties in New York City, chronicling the emotional and disturbing memories that have brought her and her family to a crisis point. Anna’s childhood was simple but comfortable—filled with homemade meals and front-porch gatherings in a close-knit neighborhood. When their father gets a new job outside the city, the family is tossed unceremoniously into a middle-class suburban existence. Anna and her sisters watch as their mother swings between tenderness and bitterness, fearful of the darkness lurking inside her. Isolated and trapped in the new house, they do everything they can to keep her from unraveling.

Kayla Maiuri holds an MFA in fiction writing from Columbia University. Born in the Greater Boston area, she now lives in Brooklyn. Mother in the Dark is her first novel.

Moderator Hanna Halperin is a graduate of the MFA program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her stories have been published in the Kenyon Reviewn+1New Ohio ReviewJoyland, and others. She has taught fiction workshops at Grub Street in Boston and worked as a domestic violence counselor.
