Brookline Booksmith Presents: The Open Door Sessions
For almost sixty years, Brookline Booksmith has found home in Coolidge Corner, sinking its roots deeply into the neighborhood we love. Every decade has brought challenges, and through them all, the Booksmith has risen and adapted, thrived and grown. As we forge our way into an unknown future, Brookline Booksmith returns to our roots, to the distinctive voices that have lingered in our minds. In our Open Door Sessions we invite authors, writers and creators whose work has moved us, supported us, and brought delight, to join us in discovering our future together. Our authors will be joined by someone of their choosing—friend, artist, fellow writer, musician. From here, we grow beyond our familiar street, and invite you all to share what is beautiful in this new world.
For our inaugural event, we are proud to welcome back to the stage Ayelet Waldman and Michael Chabon. Between them, Ayelet and Michael have presented at the Booksmith half a dozen times in the last five years alone. Their work, independent and collaborative, pushes the boundaries of genre and expectation.
Michael's fiction gently tilts reality to one side, opening up possibilities that aren’t quite far-fetched, but are instead both familiar and fresh. His writing, wry, measured, and unpretentiously wise, is a gift to read.
Ayelet’s work is personal and unapologetic, broaching difficult topics without fear--novelist, memoirist, and singular voice, she challenges stubborn perspectives and invites new visions.
We could not hope for a better team to launch this series into being--two authors who are so creative, inquisitive, irreverent and smart are everything we hope to be, and we are so pleased for them to open these doors with us.
