Virtual Event: Poetry Reading with Ellen Bass and Tess Taylor

Grab a drink and get ready for some poems. Settle in for some breath music. Join Ellen Bass and Tess Taylor to celebrate their new collections. Tess's book Rift Zone offers poems for an apocalyptic California-- the precarious places, the fault lines in whose midst we (all over America) already live. Her poems are also replete with valley girls, strip malls, ancient trees, new primates, upthrust soils. Ellen's new book Indigo plumbs the miraculous from the stuff of life--the grit of oysters, taking an old dog out to pee in the night, shopping at Ross. Both of them will read new poems, and talk about how poetry lets us share breath in a way that is safe--and reminds us that our lives are fundamentally linked.

A Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, Ellen Bass’s newest book, Indigo, was published this spring by Copper Canyon Press. It was named a New and Noteworthy Book by the New York Times and one of the most anticipated poetry collections of 2020 by Library Journal. Among her previous books are Like a Beggar, The Human Line and Mules of Love. Bass is also coauthor of the groundbreaking The Courage to Heal: A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse and Free Your Mind: The Book for Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Youth and Their Allies.

Tess Taylor is the author of five collections of poetry. Her chapbook, The Misremembered World, was selected by Eavan Boland for the Poetry Society of America’s inaugural chapbook fellowship, and The San Francisco Chronicle called her first book, The Forage House, “stunning.” Her second book, Work & Days, was hailed by critic Stephanie Burt and named one of the 10 best books of poetry of 2016 by The New York Times. Taylor’s work has appeared in The Atlantic, The Times Literary Supplement, and The New York Times, and she has received fellowships from MacDowell, Headlands Center for the Arts, and many more.
