Join Brookline Booksmith for a discussion with Jill McCorkle of her newest novel, Hieroglyphics.

Lil and Frank married young, bonding over the tragic childhood loss of a parent. Now retired, each of them begins to seek a past they’ve either lost to time or never fully uncovered. Lil, wishing to leave a history for her children, sifts through letters that reveal more than the pleasantries of the past. Frank returns repeatedly to his childhood home, triggering sometimes unwanted memories of his own past, and the childhood of the young mother who now lives there. Hieroglyphics is a mesmerizing novel about the burden of secrets carried across generations.

The New York Times has called Jill McCorkle “a born novelist.” She has published eight novels and four collections of short stories. She has received the New England Booksellers Award, the John Dos Passos Prize for Excellence in Literature, and the North Carolina Award for Literature. She was a Briggs-Copeland Lecturer in Fiction at Harvard, where she also chaired the department of creative writing. She is currently a faculty member of the Bennington College Writing Seminars and is affiliated with the MFA program at North Carolina State University.
