I always hesitate to call things a trend. Is it a trend, or does it only seem that way because I’m looking for this kind of work? Is it actually as popular as I think? Does trend make it seem like it’s trivial?
That said, I do think it’s fair to say that we’re seeing something of a surge in what you could call “hybrid” work: is it poetry, is it an essay, is it fiction? Everything gets so hard to see from certain angles. And oftentimes, those boundaries aren’t as strict as the (necessarily!) distinct shelves of a bookstore would have us think. Here are some books that have come out this year that play around in the spaces between clear genres, that question our tried-and-true categories, and bring us as readers into new spaces of possibility and play.
