August is Women in Translation Month, one of my very favorite literary celebrations of the whole year.
Translated literature in English, already sidelined in U.S.-publishing, often privileges the voices and stories of men. Women in Translation Month aims to celebrate and uplift women writers and translators, whose work is all too often relegated to the margins. At the heart of the Booksmith's dedication to this celebration is our Transnational Literature Series: an ongoing project to center works in translation, stories of migration, and the intersection of politics & literature. You can check out more information about the Series by following us on social media. As part of our Women In Translation Month, here are some of my own favorite books by women from around the world, translated beautifully into English.
