We have curated a selection of diverse books and beautiful gifts to make the season truly special for you and your loved ones—and for us, the independent booksellers who so critically rely on this time of year for support. This year, with the unpredictable impacts of COVID, we could experience publishing company shipping delays and out-of-stocks that are beyond our control, no matter how carefully we prepare. Is Brookline Booksmith open for business?
Yes! Our newly expanded store at 279 Harvard Street in Brookline is open for browsing, phone assistance and curbside pickup every day from 10am to 8pm. We are also open 24/7 to take orders right here on our website.
How long will it take you to process my online order?
We fulfill orders from our store in Brookline, Massachusetts. Online orders typically take 1-2 business days to process. If your order includes items that are not in stock, it will take additional time to process. You will receive an email with more information if this is the case.
How can I tell if a book is in stock?
Each item on our website has its availability listed. If it says “On Our Shelves Now,” we likely have a copy. However, please note that our website is not updated in real-time, and it does not reflect items that are on hold for other customers. If you want to double-check an item's availability before you place your order, please call the store at 617-566-6660.
If a book I ordered is out of stock, how long will it take the Brookline Booksmith to get it?
Typically, out of stock titles arrive at our store within 3-5 business days. However, under the current circumstances, there may be some delays. We cannot guarantee specific delivery dates.
Can I pick up my order at the store?
Yes! Curbside pick-up is now available at our new slide-through window at 279 Harvard Street during store hours. All curbside pick-up orders must be paid for in advance either online or over the phone. You will receive a notification email confirming that your order is ready for pickup if you order online. Please make sure you have received and read that email before coming to the store.
Do you offer local delivery?
No, we do not offer local delivery.
Can my order be shipped?
Yes, if you are shipping within the United States. Unfortunately, we do not ship internationally at this time. We offer USPS Priority Mail (2-5 business days) and USPS Media Mail (3-10 business days). Only books and CDs can be sent via USPS Media Mail, but it is an uninsured shipping method. We will contact you if your order is not eligible for Media Mail.
Please Note: If some of the books that you request are out of stock at the store and need to be ordered, we will wait to ship your order until we receive all of your books. If you would prefer for your books to be shipped as they are available, there will be an additional shipping fee for each package.
How much does shipping cost?
As you may know, there will be temporary USPS rate increases through the holiday season this year, which will go into effect starting October 19, 2020 and ending December 26, 2020. To account for this shipping increase, our new shipping rates are as follows.
Has the pandemic impacted delivery times?
Yes. The post office is experiencing delays due to the COVID-19 crisis, especially with USPS Media Mail. If an order is time-sensitive, such a gift, we recommend ordering further in advance than you normally would and choosing USPS Priority Mail.
Where can I find the tracking information for my order?
Please email us at email@example.com to request your USPS tracking number.
What if my package is lost in the mail?
Any missing package claims must be made with the USPS directly. We can provide the USPS tracking number if you email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Brookline Booksmith is not responsible for packages lost in the mail.
Do you offer Discounts?
Brookline Booksmith Members enjoy 20% discounts in-store, online and by phone during our Bi-annual Members Sale. All other discounts can be applied in the store or by phone, only. Discounts are available on new full priced books only and should be presented before we ring in your order. Discounts are available for Bicycle Benefit Members, book clubs, Brookline Arts Center Members, Coolidge Corner Theater Members, Grub Street Members, senior citizens, teachers and librarians, and WBUR, WGBH, and WUMB members.
What payment methods are accepted on the website?
All major credit cards, debit cards, and our Brookline Booksmith gift cards can be used on our site. Your card will be charged when you check out.
If I need to cancel my order, what do I do?
Please contact us by phone at 617-566-6660 or by email at email@example.com if you need to cancel your order. If your order has already been completed, we cannot refund you through the website and will need to do so over the phone or at the store.
Can my order be gift-wrapped?
With a heavy heart, no. While we have a long-standing tradition of hosting volunteers in the store to help us offer customers gift wrap free of charge, social distancing, and other restrictions COVID has placed on us this year, makes this impossible. We do, however, offer a beautiful selection of gift wrap and cards for sale in the store.
Can I include a gift message?
Yes. In the comments section at checkout, please indicate the gift message you would like, and we will include a handwritten enclosure card with the package.
What can I purchase on your website?
On our website, you can purchase any full-priced book (that we carry or that is available for us to order), our gift cards, and a selection of our beautiful gifts. Many of our popular items, like cards, puzzles, journals, used books, bargain books, and art supplies are not currently available for purchase online. Please visit the store, or call us at 617-566-6660 to purchase these items over the phone. While we feature many bestselling gifts online, we hope to make them available for purchase online in the near future.
Can I buy self-published books, textbooks, or out of print books on your website?
No. However, because our online catalog is powered by a third-party service, sometimes books are listed on our website that are unavailable for us to order, including self-published books. We are not able to remove these books from our store, unfortunately. If you want to check if a given book is available, please call us at 617-566-6660 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Do you offer digital gift cards?
No. We only sell physical gift cards at this time. They can either be mailed to a recipient free of charge or they can be picked up at the store. The physical gift cards can be redeemed online, over the phone or in the store.
Do you sell digital audiobooks?
Do you sell ebooks?
While we hope to offer customers ebooks on www.brooklinebooksmith.com sometime soon, you can purchase them from our storefront on Bookshop in the meantime. Once on our page, search for the book you want, and select “get the ebook.” Please note that Bookshop is a third-party platform and we do not own or operate it.
Are there other ways I can support the store?
Yes! Please consider shopping early for the holidays, in person, online, or by phone! You can buy a gift card to use in the store, over the phone, or online. You can attend a virtual event. You can become a Brookline Booksmith Member and enjoy access to our Bi-annual 20% Off Member Sale. You can buy and sell used books. We are so grateful to be open for our customers, who have been such a tremendous support throughout the pandemic.
What are the Covid safety protocols the store is following?
We are taking every precaution to protect the health and safety of our customers and staff. With careful cleaning, easy to access sanitizer, and not-to-exceed limits on how many people we can have in the store at any one time. While in the store or during curbside pick-up, customers and staff must wear a face mask that covers both the nose and the mouth and follow social distancing protocols.
